What is an exhaust emission? What causes exhaust emissions? D ifferent types of exhaust emissions Exhaust emissions refer to the gases and particles that are released into the atmosphere as a result of the combustion process in internal combustion engines, such as those found in cars, trucks, motorcycles, and various industrial machinery.  These emissions are a byproduct of burning fossil fuels, such as gasoline or diesel, to produce the power necessary for these engines to function.  The primary components of exhaust emissions include: Carbon Dioxide (CO2): This is a greenhouse gas responsible for contributing to global warming and climate change. It is a product of the complete combustion of carbon-based fuels. Carbon Monoxide (CO): This colorless, odorless gas is toxic to humans and animals when inhaled in large quantities. It forms when there is incomplete combustion of fuel. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): NOx is a collective term for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen monoxide (NO). They
